Bay of Islands Trip #1

July 24th, 2014

I spent the past five days on a kayak trip through the Bay of Islands area with Coastal Adventures. I haven't had time today to write up anything but I've posted a slide show of photos from the trip to begin with. I'll get more up in a few days or next week.[...]

Little Harbour--A Photographer's Dream

Little Harbour--A Photographer's Dream

July 18th, 2014

I arrived back in Halifax last Thursday around noon, and was greeted in baggage claim by a couple of text messages from a friend I know from the weekly Thursday night Pub Stumpers trivia game in Sheet Harbour, asking me if I wanted to go out with a group kayaking for a couple of nights in the Little Harbour area, just west of where I am on the Eastern Shore. I immediately responded “I’m in,” headed home, unpacked, repacked, and then drove into town for supplies.[...]

Near Death on the High Seas

Near Death on the High Seas

July 18th, 2014

That's a pic of Thor Heyerdahl. I came across this book while browsing the shelves of the Sheet Harbour branch of the Halifax Public Libraries, and immediately the title appealed to my sensibilities. “What a great title!” I exclaimed. “How could I go wrong? How could it possibly be boring?” So I checked it out, and gave it a go. The book consists of a dozen chapters, half of which are excerpts from books and the other half are articles/essays.[...]

Experimental Photographs

Experimental Photographs

July 3rd, 2014

I have been experimenting with long exposure photography of the coast to get images that are more expressive than simply documentary. To do this during the day, I am using a 1000x Neutral Density filter on my lens, which extends the exposure by a factor of about 10 stops. That is a pretty dark filter, and held up to your eye you almost can’t see through it.[...]

Borgles Island and Beyond, Second Video, June 29 2014

July 3rd, 2014

I spent the day last Friday on an excursion of 16 km or so around Borgle’s Island, which lies between Shoal Bay and the mouth of Ship Harbour. Back in the 1970s, Borgle’s Island was part of an area along the Eastern Shore that had been designated to become a Canadian national park.[...]

Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved The Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel

Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved The Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel

July 3rd, 2014

I first read Longitude back in the late 1990’s not long after it came out, and when I was reading a lot about the history and philosophy of science. I remember enjoying the book, but that was really about all. A couple of weeks ago I saw the book on a friend’s bookshelf and asked if I could borrow it. It seemed a good time to reread the book.[...]

Kokatat Hydrus 3L Dry Top and Bibs

Kokatat Hydrus 3L Dry Top and Bibs

July 3rd, 2014

So, I don’t get it. I bought this dry suit system of bib pants and dry top for three reasons: 1) It is considerably less expensive than a full dry suit (which runs about $1000); 2) I wanted the versatility so as the days got warmer I could just use the dry top along with a shorty wet-suit or by itself (and go nekkid underneath); and 3) I owned a similar set up by Kokatat some years ago when I did a lot of whitewater paddling and it worked great.[...]
